Bike-to-Work Day 2019

Everyone is encouraged to trade their cars for their bikes and participate in the Sioux City metropolitan area’s Bike to Work Day event on Friday, May 17, 2019. Bike to Work Day is part of a national effort, endorsed by the U.S. Department of Transportation and promoted by the League of American Bicyclists, to highlight the benefits of bicycling, and to prove to people that it is feasible to leave the car at home for some commutes.

Bike to Work Day is a part of Bike to Work Week, which lasts from May 13th-May 19th. The month of May is National Bike to Work Month. Local sponsors and planning committee members of the event include: Siouxland CyclistsSiouxland Trails FoundationAlbrecht CycleSioux City, Iowa Government, South Sioux City, Siouxland District Health DepartmentDowntown Partners – Sioux City, Fareway, Hardline Coffee Co.. and Siouxland Interstate Metropolitan Planning Council (SIMPCO).

Benefits of biking include: better physical and mental health, a cleaner environment, and saving commuters money. Bicycling to work is an easy way to incorporate physical activity and exercise into each day, which contributes to better physical and mental health. Bicycles produce no greenhouse gas emissions, which makes them great for the environment. Bicycles are much more affordable to own and operate than a motor vehicle, since you do not need to pay for gas, parking, insurance, and other vehicle expenses.

Bike-to-Work t-shirts will be sold for $15 (cash) at Albrecht Cycle Shop and Hardline Coffee Co., Downtown Sioux City. (Available after April 18)

Events are being offered on May 17 for Bike to Work Day. The day’s events include a complimentary commuter breakfast at Albrecht’s Cycle shop (7-9 am), and all-day food or drink specials for bicyclists who show their helmets or Bike-to-Work Day shirt at participating downtown locations.
